New totes have been added to the family! New handmade, one-of-a-kind vintage Indian bags have just made an appearance on the site today! We have been working on these bags for an upcoming photo shoot for Country Living Magazine. We have a love for these our signature totes as they were the first vintage piece we offered on our website when we started two year’s ago.
Our excusive totes are hand-crafted in house by Spool co-owner Gloria Abhold out of salvaged Navajo rugs. Each tote takes days to construct and features their own amazing rich history and patina. Enjoy!

It's Rodeo Time~

It’s Rodeo Time Here in Ellensburg. Ellensburg, WA, our home base, is home to one of the largest rodeos in the nation. During Labor Day weekend each year, Ellensburg turns from a small sleepy farm town to a bustling city with more horses on the road then cars (okay maybe not exactly, but close!) We have an annual family tradition of attending the pancake feed breakfast, country fair (mostly for the corndogs and fresh scones), and usually at least one of the rodeo events.

For those of you that haved asked this is a great article about the attractions in Ellensburg.

Other than attending rodeo festivities we have been busy this week prepping for our booth at the Thorp Fruit & Antique Mall. The space we have been assigned has an open back railing and the right side wall is peg board, which has posed some challenges. We are working on coming up with some innovative ways to make the space feel more like a cozy room. The owners and staff at Thorp Fruit are about the friendliest around and we can not wait to join the team.

We will be spending most of Wednesday setting up the exterior of the booth then moving in our mercantile collection on Thursday. Before we get too carried away with all the friends and family in town for the rodeo and setting up the mercantile, we have listed some great new fall sweaters, boots and dresses on the site.

A New Adventure~

We just could not help ourselves. Yes, we may already be stretched to the limit, with both our clothing and new mercantile line, but the opportunity could not be passed up.

Our local Country Market, the Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall, where you will find not only the best local country produce but also two floors of salvaged home goods and antiques just happens to have an opening for a new vendor. We had such a fun time having our make-shift mercantile store at the Farm Chicks show that we though, heck, why not have a local Spool booth permanently at our local country market. It is just minutes from our studio, so yes, we did it! Signed on the dotted line and we are in!

The space is small only an 11 by 10 foot spot, but you know we will cram every last inch full of our latest mercantile items, farm finds, and maybe even some of our clothing line.

We will be moving part of our studio which is busting at the seems over to the new spot the first of September. We can not wait to show you how it turns out. I am sure we will be spending the weekend working on the layout and new projects that will be featured in the space.

Looking to Fall~

We have partnered with a new designer to bring a great new batch of dresses in today that will transition from late summer into early fall.

These dresses are great paired with boots and a cardigan as the weather starts to cool. Yes, sorry we did say fall is coming, I think whether we like it or not!

We attended a great market last week and hand-picked some amazing Navajo and boho style sweaters that we will bring to the site this fall. I lost a quick game of rock-paper-scissors (our offcial go-to decision maker here at Spool) and was “volunteered” to try on the great chunky sweaters in 90 degree heat. Shopping for our fall line in summer sometimes is not the funest task but it allowed us to select some amazing fall items.

We are also tossing around the idea of brining true vintage Cowichan Sweaters to the vintage category this fall. Beside cowboy boots, okay and maybe a long list of other items, we are more than obsessed with the ethnic pattern and chunky knit in these sweaters. Tara, our vintage buyer has of course been pushing us to carry them on the site. Let us know what you think and you might see some vintage sweaters pop up this fall.

Boots!

Tara Ehlis, our vintage buyer (and photographer, and all around web guru) spends a good part of her day, visiting local barn sales, estate sales and the best flea markets to hand-pick vintage and salvaged items for our clothing and home line. I know, tough gig!

She has established great connections with vintage dealers around the state and has a great eye for finding vintage treasures. We are excited about our new vintage cowboy boots we were able to get on the site today. Ellensburg, WA is one of the best places to find authentic cowboy boots. Host to one of the top Rodeos in the nation, cowboy boots are almost a required dress code come September here in Ellensburg.

These (above pair) vintage 1970’s Dingo Cowboy boots are my favorite pair we have ever salvaged. If they were in my size, I think I would have had to snag them from the site!

We have almost daily request for vintage cowboy boots and hope to keep boots on the site permanently. The new vintage boot collection has just been listed under our vintage section.

A Spool Home Tour, Take a Peak Inside Heather's Home~

We have been asked many times for a sneak peak inside the Spool Gals homes and I finally had the chance to steal some of Tara’s time and have her take a few quick shots for our first sneak peak of the Spool Gals three homes. I live here with my amazing husband Travis and our 9 year old chocolate lab Kota that you can barely see peaking out from our front door.

We built this new home about two year’s ago nestled into the rural farmlands of the Ellensburg valley in Eastern Washington State (Spool No.72 headquarters). When building we really wanted the house to have the character of an older home and to look as it had been there for years. Incorporating hand scraped hardwood floors, interior transoms and vintage inspired glass tiles helped give the house character and that cozy inviting feel.

Photo above: As shown in Spool No.72, we are inspired by salvaged textiles. This vintage Navajo rug was a great find at a local barn sale and we constructed the sliding barn doors out of re-purposed pine boards finished with a light grey stain. The barn doors make a great transition into our home office.

Photo above: Our home office is one of the most used rooms in the house. The room is filled with salvaged finds. An old trunk made the perfect coffee table when given a boost by some old fruit crates.

Photo above: Most of the artwork in our home was painted by my talented sis and Spool No.72 co-owner Tara Ehlis. For those of you that do not know, Spool is owned and operated by a mother and two daughter trio, myself, Heather Paul, sister Tara Ehils and our talented mom Gloria Abhold. The No.36 painting was constructed from layers of paint and newsprint, and then sanded down to give the look of a 100 year old panting.

Photo above: In living room we used a large salvage fruit bin for our coffee table. We have used many salvaged furniture items in our home as we have found that their character can not be found in new furniture items. Plus it gives us an extra excuse to go treasure hunting each weekend!

Photos above: The kitchen is my favorite room in the house and a gathering place for friends and family. We added DIY character to the kitchen with hand poured concrete counter tops which was quite an adventure to do. Not perfect from cracks, I tell myself the counter tops are just chanelling a very cool rustic look! The center island was crafted by my husband Travis. The home-made butcher block island top was constructed out of strips of maple wood.

Farm Chicks 2011~

We did it! Our first Farm Chicks Show is a wrap! What a blast we had. We were very excited to be invited to take the short trip to Spokane and be a part of such a fun show. As an online store, this was our first venture having our items at a show, and we could not wait.

We started our day bright and early on Friday morning at 4AM and off we went with a 26 foot U-Haul and truck caravan jam packed with a large part of the Spool studio and our new mercantile line that we were premiering.

We were not sure what to expect when we arrived but it was a site to see, lines of trailers and vans from all of the northwest unloading the most amazing vintage finds and farm fresh treasures. It was very hard to stay focused but we finally got everything unloaded and started to work on our little mercantile store. With only an old time mercantile theme in our minds, we started the best part of decorating and designing the booth. It was so fun to see our clothing line and new mercantile home line blend together.

The show ran all day Saturday and Sunday and we cannot believe how many of our great Spool friends we ran into and the great new friends we made. Our favorite part was on Sunday seeing so many of the vendors were sporting their new Spool duds they had purchased the day before. Hope you enjoy some of the pics of our booth at the show!

A New Crop of Summer Bags~

Our new crop of summer bags are here! Check out the latest collection of totes. The new collection features county style embroidery and sweet embellishments. The soft cotton totes are perfect for caring all the goodies from the summer farmers markets or flea market sales.

We photographed the bags in a growing wheat field just outside our barn. After a cold and wet spring the wheat and hay fields are finally growing in the Valley. And after a very long snowy winter, we can not wait for warmer temps!

The Spool gals are working again this week to put the final touches on our country mercantile line for the Farm Chicks show. We have almost all the new items priced and ready to show! We are using an old canvas style tent that works perfect for country mercantile. Gloria and Tara are working on designing and customizing a green and white stripe awning for the front which will give the tent a much needed pop of color.

We can not wait to share pics of the mercantile when complete.

After the Farm Chicks show, next on the agenda is working on a much needed update to our blog. We receive many requests from our great buyers and fans for more information on the Spool Team and our clothing line. The new blog will include a profile on the Spool Team, Tours of our Homes, Picking Tricks, and much more! If there is something you think would be great to include, drop us a line and let us know!

Baking Up Some New Jewelry Arrivals!

We are in love with our new jewelry arrivals. Tara Ehlis, resident Spool photographer and co-owner photographed our great new arrivals with a salvaged collection of vintage baking goodies. We had a blast spending last weekend salvaging local barn sales for vintage baking canisters, rolling pins, muffin tins, and our favorite vintage mason jars.

The Spool Gals have been spending most of our free time, stalking local barn sales, looking for those one-of-a-kind salvaged farm items for the upcoming Farm Chicks Show, which is scheduled for the first week in June. As we are an online store only, we were trilled to be invited to set up a store front at the show. We will be premiering our new County Mercantile Home line at the show and can not wait to show it off. We have our barn chalked full of vintage grain sack pillows, apple picking buckets, vintage wooden crates, and so many more vintage goodies, that we are busting at the seems.
The new County Mercantile will be premiering on the Spool website mid-summer!

New Salvaged Leather Finds~

It was love at first sight with our three new distressed leather bags featured in our salvaged collection. All of the bags have the rugged patina that we always search for and the character that is so hard to find.

The Gladstone bag made quite a trip! It was found in a small village shop in South France. We just about died when we saw that the bag was topped off with a worn whip-stitched handle. This is truly a one-in-a-kind find!

The Vintage 70’s Daybag and the Vintage Painted Shoppers tote are great 70’s finds we found locally at a great barn sale. The 70’s Daybag is made of a super soft carmelly leather and features buckled front pockets. The Painted Shoppers tote is adorned with hand painted flowers and tooled woven leather. We can see both of these as perfect market bags shopping for those flea market finds on the weekend!

The bags were photoed on the sliding barn door of an old fruit warehouse that we drive by each day into the studio. The doors worn from years of harsh weather made the perfect backdrop for our new salvaged finds.
